My work explores the role of prayer in a non-religious setting, as a universal means of expression and aspiration. Prayer could be compared to a meditation for the creative person on the subject they are studying. I endeavored to write my own prayers, on matters that responded to my own immediate concerns, these could be seen as hopes or affirmations. I then sought out religious writings which resonated with me, acquiring them and removing the religious content. By removing the religious content I felt the words became more poignant & they were renewed by their release from their intended context.
Along with words, colour can have a profound effect on people, turquoise is said to open the lines of communication from the heart to the spoken word, it encourages clarity of thought.
The use of the circle is integral to the concept, it is not only a viewing point it is a way to focus the mind and eyes. It describes unity. The circles in my work are created by the paper making process, heightening this idea of unity.
The number 7 is also important to my work. It is it's significance with the amount of days in the week, one page of the book per day and of the seven stages of meditation in Buddhism which focuses so much on insight and knowledge.
